A Post Script to Steve’s Post about the Nuclear Renaissance

March 13, 2012

This just in from the NY Times:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said a June breaker fire at the 478-megawatt Fort Calhoun nuclear plant was of “high safety significance,” increasing work the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) must complete before the troubled unit can restart.

The NRC’s preliminary “red” safety violation, the agency’s most serious classification, is the second for a U.S. reactor in as many years…

Fort Calhoun shut 11 months ago for a month-long refueling that had to be extended when rising flood water from the Missouri River surrounded the site.. .

This does seem to support Steve’s thesis that the industry is unlikely to enjoy a renaissance any time soon.

We are far more likely to see a renaissance in natural gas fired, highly efficient cogeneration power plants and possibly clean-burning coal plants. It is time to say goodby to solar and wind power which have proven to be ineffective for supplying the large-scale electricity needs of modern society.
